The competition between DVDs and video-on-demand is not an example of increasing returns because the two technologies did not emerge at the same time. Thornburg (2009) has classified Red Queens as “huge competition between two technologies; in the process, all other competitors are left behind”. DVDs and video-on-demand are two technologies that lead the way for a means of watching movies. Video-on-demand can be accessed and used without leaving the home, but several consumers have not upgraded to the required hardware to use video-on-demand. I would relate Netflix and video-on-demand together, because they are new technologies that emerge with time.

ReplyDeleteThanks for commenting on my blog! I have read through several of our classmates' blogs, and it seems as though Red Queens wins. I thought it was an example of increasing returns, but I think I am going to have to rethink my decision. I do not watch many movies, but when I do it is almost never on DVD. I either use video-on-demand or Netflix-on-demand. The only problem with Netflix is that the movies that are available on demand are fairly old or not that good. I think that this is going to change very quickly - along with a higher price!
Sullus,
ReplyDeleteI voted on Increasing Returns as Mr. Chappelear because even though they did not merge at the same time, one is disappearing because of the other. I don't see it as Red Queen because video-by-demand is not a new technology that has moved ahead of a bunch of competitors. The competitors include DVDs and video-by-demand. They are the only two. When Redbox is thrown in the mix, then I could consider the technological concept of dispensing videos as a competitive edge fiercely moving ahead and others trying to join. How do you feel about Redbox as a Red Queen?

Sullus,
ReplyDeleteYou are a smart man not to subscribe to Netflix. I am in the process of canceling my membership because I spend too much time watching videos which could be better spent reading!
I separated out the technologies and opted to focus on video-on-demand because I no longer see them as competing technologies as I believe it will obsolete DVDs.
